Ok, it seems to be a key binding issue again or a bug. If you play on X Box controller alone you can not change size while removing soil (adding soil works with Controller LT and RT). But pressing R or T on key board does work for me (thanks Dirak2012 for help). - so this seems to help for now. In the controller option menu there is nothing

There's an option in the settings for NMS to change how the flight controls work - Locked rather than Tethered - that makes a huge difference. I'm fine with keyboard and mouse for NMS, so I haven't tried a controller. For other games both the Steam Controller and the PS3 controller
